Required by Maine Revised Statutes Annotated Title 31 Sec. 1 all partnerships and sole proprietors must record their name, doing business as, and type of business with the Town Clerk. If a partner or business dissolves, a withdrawal certificate must be filed. There is a recording fee of $10.00.

The annual Municipal election is held on the 1st and 2nd Tuesday in June. The first Tuesday is the open town meeting voting on the next fiscal year budget, etc. The second Tuesday is the "secret ballot" election of town officials; town councilors; school committee members; and MDI District Trustee; and referendum.
The State/Federal General Election is held on the Tuesday following the 1st Monday of November. The State Primary Election is held on the 2nd Tuesday of June of each general election year.
Elections are held in the Municipal Building auditorium, third floor, 93 Cottage Street. Polls open at 8:00 a.m. and close at 8:00 p.m. Voters Registration The State of Maine allows residents to register to vote anytime, including the day of the election. Bar Harbor residents may register to vote in person at the Town Clerk's office anytime; or when changing or renewing a driver's license at the Registry of Motor Vehicles at least twenty-five days prior to an election.
Proof of residency and proof of identity is required, e.g. driver's license showing physical street address in Bar Harbor; photo identification and document with voter's name and physical address.Residence for Voting Purposes as defined in M.R.S.A. Title 21 A sec. 112, is that place where the person has established a fixed and principal home to which the person, whenever temporarily absent, intends to return. Under this definition, residence is something a person establishes, not something a person chooses. While the definition includes the person's "intent to return" to a residence, it makes it clear that the residence must in fact exist, and the person must have established it as a fixed and principal home.

Town of Bar Harbor Municipal Records include birth, marriage, and death records for Bar Harbor (formerly Town of Eden) residents and if the event took place in Bar Harbor.
Records from present date back to the late 1790. Records prior to 1892 are not a complete listing. A fee of $5.00 per record searched. If record is found, $10.00 fee includes a photocopy labeled "NOT FOR LEGAL PURPOSES". A $10.00 fee for a certified copy in long form. Make check payable to TOWN OF BAR HARBOR. Include all known information with the written request: name, dates, location. Fees must be paid in advance. Please mail requests to the Town Clerk or call for an appointment.

Resident fishing or hunting licenses for persons 16 years of age or
older may be obtained at the Town Office at a cost of $27.00, or at
area merchants or online through the Department of Inland Fisheries and
Wildlife, http://www.mefishwildlife.com.
Non Resident fishing and hunting licenses are no longer available at the Town Office. Area merchants sell non resident licenses and they can be purchased online through the Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife, http://www.mefishwildlife.com.
Upon age 16, proof of successful
completion of a Hunter's Safety Course must be provided to obtain an
adult license.
Other license authorizations that may be obtained include: archery license, resident serviceman, combination license, duplicate license, migratory waterfowl, muzzleloading, pheasant, and bear. There is now a fee of $8.00 for the over 70 Lifetime license but the hunting portion includes the additional authorizations, except those by lottery, subject to change by Maine Department of Inland Fisheries & Wildlife.
New or renewal of liquor license: an application from the State of Maine Department of Public Safety must be completed, approved by the local municipality by sending the application to the Town Clerk's office along with the administrative fee of $52, and mail the approved license and fee to the State. If a public hearing is required, the administrative fee for the Town is then $125 to cover advertising costs. (Revised 7/1/12)

District Adopted Budget as of April 3, 2013.
The Annual Town Meeting will be held June 4, 2013 at 7:00 p.m. in the Emerson School Gymnasium.
Open town meeting includes the municipal and elementary school budget for fiscal year 2014.
The election of municipal officers and MDI Regional School District budget validation will be voted on June 11th at the polls from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. in the Municipal Building Auditorium.
Note: The new State of Maine School Consolidation mandates that the
school budgets voted at their scheduled annual meetings be validated by
a secret ballot vote on June 11th. Voters elected not to continue the Local School validation. Island wide voted to continue the MDI High School District Budget Validation and this year Article 2 is the option to continue the validation vote with a YES vote or to discontinue the secret ballot validation with a NO vote.
Businesses serving liquor and providing any entertainment are required to hold a special amusement permit, pursuant to State of Maine statute 28A MRSA and local ordinance Town Code Chapter 14.
Annually, special amusement permits must be renewed; and all expiration dates are the same day as the holders' liquor license.
Submit a completed Special Amusement Permit application and fee to the Town Clerk's office, to place your request for a public hearing on the next Town Council agenda. Please allow time to publish notice of public hearing.
Businesses operating a taxicab, pedicab, limousine, or bus within the Town limits of Bar Harbor must be licensed to do so by the Town Council, pursuant to Town Code Chapter 40.
Complete the application, seek written approval from the Police Chief, submit the application with the Police Chief's approval, fee, and certificate of insurance showing limits of liability and vehicle vin numbers that are insured to operate as applicable to the Town Clerk's office. Your application for approval will be place on the next regularly scheduled Town Council agenda.
